Look! I posted! ;)
Jun. 4th, 2004 09:33 amAn interesting week...
Over the weekend, I broke down and purchased one of the more expensive DDR Max gamepads, being a geek. My knees are bullies, you see and informed me that if I did not do so, they would go on strike and not let me walk if I continued to abuse them like that. Feh to bad knees exercising their influence. But I suppose I will want to continue that walking thing 10-20 years down the road, so I shall bow to their power.
Now, one of the benefits of doing this was that I now have two DDR pads. Thus, the kidlet and I can play DDR together. We did this. Was much fun. Sadly, we won't be doing it again for a few weeks (I'll get to this).
Monday was the happy gaming/cookout day. We BBQ'd, Lori ran her usual Monday game on and off throughout the day/evening. I played Badminton with the midget, which was awesome (I love badminton). The badminton stuff was a surprise for the kid. I got permission to take down the swingset the landlord had left (and which D-man has seriously outgrown in the last year) to clear space for it. Took him a day's practice, but we were hitting a few extended volleys on Monday. :) Another memory from my youth shared with my son. Woot!
So we move along in the week and suddenly it is Wednesday. This was NOT a good day. Around 1:30 I got a call from home. The school had just called and D-man had taken a serious fall in gym (playing dodgeball) and injured himself in an unspecified manner. Luckily the school nurse, otherwise clueless, had recalled that his mom was an EMT and called her for a decision rather than automatically tossing him on an ambulance.
The nearest hospital being a disaster that his mom "wouldn't bring a sick DOG to, let alone a person"(Lawrence Livermore?), she opted to get him herself and drag him to Mass General. Since MGH is conveniently just across the bridge from me, I met them there after a brief amount of arranging coverage and checking in with the chain of command for permission.
4 hours later, we had left the hospital. He has either a very serious sprained akle or a hairline fracture in the gap between the Growth Plate and the Fibula in his ankle. The way in which the ankle swelled leaned towards indicating a break by its severity, but they couldn't tell from the x-ray. (Hard to see a break right along the edge where two bones come together.) In an adult, that would mean take it easy and treat it like a sprain. In a child, there can be serious complications if there IS a break in that area and it isn't treated like one, resulting in the bones growing together improperly and unevenly...impacting his foot permanently. As such, he is in a nice cast and crutches combination for at least a week. He'll be re-evaluated next Friday. After that, he may come out of the cast or at least be fitted with a walking cast.
Yes, I already signed the cast...which they make colored these days...so he picked purple (that's MY son, clearly! :)).
Tonight, we're taking him to see Prisoner of Azkaban, which I Fandango'd tickets for on Tuesday. Definitely nice to have a treat. He's been home since the accident...returning to school on Monday.
Hrm...I should probably get back to work now. Pretend I'm earning my pay or something. :)
