(I'll probably post a bit about Arisia later, however, this came to my mind as something to post first.)
Names are funny things. In many cases, you will forever associated someone with the name you first came to know them by. I don't call
jetshade Jet much...and I struggle to call Danny (yes, of Leather by Danny) by that name. When I'm thinking about them, it is by the name I met them using. Nothing strange there, but certainly interesting.
This weekend, I met the amazingly sweet and pleasant
shadesong for the first time (and far too briefly, due to her schedule and my own near-constant security/childcare duties). I've never met her before...however, I happen to know her real name, her full lj name and that a lot of people simply call her "song". It was certainly multiple months after I began reading her journal that I discovered her real name...however, I felt most comfortable calling her that. I guess it just seemed the right name for her, something I didn't realize until I had spoken to her a few times.
Since it is nigh certain that she prefers to be called by her nom de plume by those who are not actual personal friends, I'll have to try to retrain myself before next year. ;) And hopefully find a little more time to chat, if only to compare notes a bit more as parents. ;)
It is really interesting, though, how some people you always associate with a single name, while others may change around over the years. For example, I'm now just as comfortable calling (and thinking of)
vyseryn by a multitude of names, depending on context...and rarely by the nickname I (and everyone) used to call him back in the old days. And
kajivar is, well, more Kaji than Cyn, although in person only her real name comes to mind.
No real point to this ramble...just some thoughts that struck me over the weekend in a nickname rich environment like Arisia.
