So...I returned to Nero for the first time in 5 years. The Ravenholt site is small...and this was the first event there, so staff didn't really know how to spread out the PCs yet. There is a fair contingent of people who remind me of Akika/Darin, but without half the OOG personality. *cough*take your hits*cough* The plot committee is small and getting smaller. Most of the other NPCs (I NPC'd) were newbies. I only attended Friday from 8pm-4am, Saturday from 6pm-midnight and Sunday from 11am-4ish. I did serious bruising damage to one shin going full speed into a concrete block and had my upper arm stepped on by somebody weighing about 270ish pounds when I was down on the ground at one point.
But I had a great time.
neo_blackwolf came on Friday with
jetshade, who was coincidentally making a special appearance on behalf of plot at the same event I returned. (Seriously, I had no idea until Thursday night!) He's hooked.
Why did I have fun? Well, sick and overpowered as the game has become, I can still sleep my way through the rules system. Seriously, all I don't have at the tip of my fingers still are the skill costs (only know 70% of them) and the newer playtests (shouting out the damage number at the end of incants is something I forgot more than a few times). It is comfortable, because I grew up on it (not because it is a fantastically good system).
Some of my favorite people in the world (whom I haven't seen in ages) are still there: Gabriel, Alexa, Daramor, Purdue, Ribe (showed up to NPC),
badgerrogue and Shatter are just the high points of an even longer list (
tiafallen...no, no...I said I'd stop now).
I'm not in the shape I used to be, but until I tire I'm still frankly competitive with the new crop of fighters. I even put some serious damage into Trivanus, who used to eat me up. And I will be in that shape soon, since I'm doing cardio work 6 days a week in addition to just being more active in general.
The game is high fantasy which is fun and exciting in a low stress way. The more mature and gritty games have a lot of appeal for me in general, but I don't have the energy in my life for that level of emotional investment in plot right now. Happy fun playtime with moderately exaggerated angst and good exercise will do.
Between that and the fact that Neo can play non-combat now and full combat in just over 2 years, I'm set on continuing to play. I'll never be the psycho constant player I used to be, but what the hell. I don't need to be level ridiculous thousand and keep up with the Joneses anymore.
Besides, it is kind of amusing to hear, "Yeah, we could use another one, but else who do we have that can handle...those......kind.....of.....stats....." and turn around to find yourself being stared at.
